Every now and again I like to post some of the interesting reads from around the beer world. Now I don’t read everything, but I try to read up as much as possible. I don’t check Beer Advocate for news from beer raters, and I often wonder what I’m missing but I just don’t have the patience for it. This will give you a taste of what I do read though, I read beer blogs, beer news, and sometimes I read blogs from breweries. Here’s what we’ve got this time around:
Beervana – BrewDog makes the strongest-ever fermented beer at 28%
This is different than their 33-55% beers that use freezing to reach high levels. The beer itself is only served on draft and comes from the mouth of a taxidermied deer head.
It’s Pub Night – Oregonians infuriated over claim that Colorado is Beervana
I’m from Oregon so I understand their anger. Indeed, I do not believe that any city in Colorado deserves the title ‘Beervana.’ I believe it should be Portland, Oregon. However, the conservative Oregonian newspaper takes a stab at their northern liberal city by giving the title to Denver.
Washington Post – Beer’s Black Market
There’s been a lot of talk over this article, where a few brewers and brewery owners talk about their frustration with their rarer products being sold for high prices on eBay. Follow ups on a few blogs include this this and this. We also had a couple brief comments on our FB page.
New School – Beer Made For Food
You’ve heard of people crafting dishes to match a beer, how about beer made specifically for a dish? Breakside Brewery opened just after I left Oregon, but this is a brewery I wish I could frequent. Brewer Ben Edmunds is bringing in a chef once a month and that chef will be brewing a beer with him to match one of their best plates of food.
Denver Off The Wagon – Funkwerks changes the name of Maori King
Funkwerks is one of our favorite breweries, Maori King (now called Southern Tropic) is one of our favorite beers. However the Maori of New Zealand were upset at the name, flooded Funkwerks facebook page with notes and explanations on why this was offensive, and Funkwerks quickly decided to change the name. I believe this was a good decision. And an interesting follow up from Westword.
Denver Off The Wagon – Ignite
The DOTW crew has put together a really fantastic looking event that will go alongside other events during GABF. There will be speakers from brewers, brewery owners, and bloggers from around the country. You need to get tickets before it sells out though.
BillyBrew – How Will Craft Breweries Compete Against Each Other
With 720 new breweries planned for next year in the US, that’s a pretty good question. Many people believe we’ll be saturated. I’m personally not so sure quite yet, I’m hoping we’ll see more and more localized small breweries…hopefully good ones…
D.I.N.G. – Thoughts on Session Beer
Now this was posted months ago but I think it’s relevant as we head into the colder months. D.I.N.G. is a major proponent of session beers, believes we don’t make enough of them in the US and gives us a few guidelines.
Pour Curator – The End of the Amateur Brewery
A very interesting article pondering the business of craft beer, some discussions on how homebrewers want to start their own brewery, but is it possible that it might be too late for the hopeful homebrewer?
